Swigging Down Swiggy Deliveries May Be A Bad Idea

Most of you have probably heard of Swiggy, the food ordering and delivery company based out of Bangalore India.  “Swiggy was inspired by the thought of providing a complete food ordering and delivery solution from the best neighbourhood restaurants to the urban foodie”; states their website.

Now, take a look at this picture, which shows you one of these neighbourhood restaurants.  The food is being cooked in a filthy environment next to a gutter and our trusty Swiggy delivery boy is waiting to deliver the food.  Now Swiggy might argue that they are not responsible for the quality of the food being delivered.  But it’s a debatable point considering their mission.  Swiggy has raised investments from reputable investors, namely Accel Partners, Bessemer Venture Partners, DST Global, Harmony Partners, Norwest Venture Partners, RB Investments and Saif Partners.  Are we saying that they have no responsibility for the quality of the food they deliver?  In the urge to earn more commissions on each delivery, do these investors turn a blind eye to our health?

The disclaimer on their website states,” Our responsibilities are limited to: (i) facilitating the availability of the Services; and (ii) serving as the limited agent of each Vendor for the purpose of accepting payments from you for your online food order and delivering your order”.  Can they really be absolved of all liabilities towards customers?  They can spend Rs 100 crore and counting under various heads like marketing, developing technology and swanky offices but not a penny to inspect and select decent food vendors!  ‘Daal main kuch to kala hai’…
